It's always the first Saturday of August, this year it's Saturday, August 5th, 2023 (yes, a weekend day!)
How Long Has Mead Day Been Around?
The American Homebrewers Association started National Mead Day in 2002. However, as many of you mead enthusiasts know, every day should be mead day. Seriously, though – mead is widely considered the world’s oldest alcoholic beverage, sprinting past beer and easily surpassing wine. Give it the crown it deserves!
Since its inception, Mead Day has only seen a growth in popularity, often serving as a steppingstone for newcomers into the rich and wonderful world of mead.
What to Expect on Mead Day
Mead Day is all about celebrating the simple joy of a hearty glass full ‘o mead. Mead brewers gather to share secrets of the trade and discuss the subtle intricacies of the craft. The American Homebrewers Association is even known to host a mead brewing competition, with the winning recipe deemed the “official” mead of the following year’s festivities.
More than anything else, Mead Day is a time for learning and fun with friends and family.
How Can I Participate in Mead Day?

Fire up Game of Thrones or Lord of the Rings or the Vikings television series and enjoy the “simpler” times (we use that word very lightly) with mead in-hand.
Above all, have fun with it! Mead Day is about celebration more than anything else. With mead seeing a resurgence in popularity over the past several years (and with more and more Renaissance fairs springing up across the country), Mead Day only promises to grow as well.
